Public Storage – Lacey, WA
When Public Storage needed exterior identification signage for its Lacey, Washington self-storage facility, the company brought the program to Plumb Signs. Our Tacoma shop produced three sets of LED-illuminated channel letters on aluminum composite (ACM) backer panels — one for the front elevation, one for the side, and one for the rear — so the facility identifies itself from every approach: highway-facing, neighborhood-facing, and the back-lot frontage that catches the headlights of cars coming off the side streets.
National self-storage operators don’t leave brand identity to chance. The Public Storage orange is a specific color, the typography is a specific weight, and the customer’s expectation when they pull into the gate is that this Lacey location looks and reads exactly like the Public Storage location they used in San Diego or Sacramento or Spokane. Hitting that brand standard at every elevation, in true color, with even nighttime illumination — without raceway boxes interrupting the building’s clean architecture — is the work.
The whole program was produced under one roof at 909 S 28th St in Tacoma — one CAD set carried every sign through engineering, finishing, permits, and install, so what shipped to the Lacey facility matched the approved drawings letter-by-letter. Same design team, same fabricators, same installation crew end-to-end.

Channel Letters That Carry the Public Storage Brand
The signs are built the way a national self-storage program needs to be built. Each letter is a custom-fabricated aluminum channel can with a translucent face, internally lit by UL-rated LED modules, and mounted to an aluminum composite (ACM) backer panel that hangs flush against the wall — no raceway box across the architecture, no interruption to the building’s wall plane. The face color is matched to the Public Storage orange brand standard, the typography holds Public Storage’s weight and spacing, and the LED color temperature is tuned so the sign reads true-to-brand at night as well as during the day.
Construction is built to last in the Pacific Northwest: aluminum cans will not rust, the ACM backer holds its finish without the warp issues of MDO or wood substrate, and the LED modules carry long-warranty modules with energy use measured in fractions of what an older neon or fluorescent system would draw. Mounting hardware is sized to the wall condition, sealed against weather, and serviceable from the outside if a module ever needs to be swapped down the line.

Fabrication & Sign Family
One program, three matched sets — built to a single Public Storage brand standard so the Lacey facility reads identically to a Public Storage location anywhere else in the country, from every elevation.
Front-of-House Identification
The primary brand-facing sign at the front of the facility — LED channel letters on ACM backer, sized for street-level recognition from the highway-side approach in true Public Storage orange.
Side-Elevation Identification
Matched channel-letter set on the side elevation — identifies the facility from the neighborhood-facing approach and the side-street traffic, in the same brand color and letter weight as the front.
Rear-Elevation Identification
The third sign in the program covers the back-lot frontage — visible to vehicles approaching from the rear access road and to traffic on the parallel side of the site. Same LED system, same brand standard.
UL-Rated LED System
All three sign sets share a single UL-rated LED illumination spec — consistent color temperature, even face brightness, low energy draw, and serviceable modules. One spec, three locations on the building, identical nighttime read.
Each letter is an aluminum channel can with a translucent face, mounted flush to an ACM backer panel — no raceway box across the architecture. Wall anchors are sized to the substrate condition and sealed against weather. The brand-orange paint finish is matched to the Public Storage corporate standard; LED modules carry a long-warranty rating tuned for outdoor service in the Pacific Northwest.

Design & Engineering
From color match to install, the program ran through one set of drawings. Plumb Signs produced shop drawings for each of the three sign sets, matched the Public Storage orange against the corporate brand standard, engineered the wall mounting for the specific substrate on each elevation, and pulled the permits with the City of Lacey before fabrication began.
- · Brand-color match to the Public Storage standard
- · Shop drawings for each of the three elevations
- · Wall-substrate engineering & mount sizing
- · UL-rated LED illumination spec
- · ACM backer panel layout & fabrication
- · Permitting & code compliance with the City of Lacey
A single CAD set carried the program through fabrication, permitting, and install — same drawings, same dimensions, same hardware schedule, sign by sign and elevation by elevation.
Why This Approach Works for Self-Storage Facilities
A self-storage facility lives or dies on two things at the curb: a customer being able to find the gate, and the customer trusting that the brand on the building is the same brand they researched online. Three elevations of brand-accurate, LED-illuminated channel letters do both. Drivers coming off the highway recognize the orange and the typography from the corporate site, identify the facility before they reach the turn-in, and arrive at the gate already feeling like they’re at the right place.
For national operators like Public Storage, the brand match is the contract — the orange has to be the orange, the letterforms have to be the letterforms, and the nighttime read has to feel the same in Lacey as it does in any other market. Building all three sign sets to one specification, in one shop, by one team, is how that brand standard actually lands at the building — not just on the approval drawing.
