The Challenge

Cheney Stadium required a full signage overhaul that spanned highway pylons, LED boards, and internal branding — all completed between baseball seasons. Tight construction windows and public safety requirements demanded detailed coordination and engineering precision.

Our team managed permitting, fabrication, and installation across multiple elevations while integrating new LED systems and modernized supports — all without disrupting venue operations.

Our Process

How We Built It

Five phases delivered between seasons.

01

Planning & Design

Developed structural drawings, electrical routes, and visibility studies for stadium-wide LED integration.

02

Highway 16 Pylon

Installed a freestanding pylon featuring aluminum channel letters and a dynamic LED message center.

03

Main Scoreboard

Built a 35′ × 66′ HD LED video board with four catwalks and custom TACOMA RAINIERS channel letters.

04

Auxiliary Display

Added a 16′ × 70′ scoreboard with illuminated Rainiers logo and synchronized visuals.

05

Ribbon LED Display

Wrapped 130 ft of seating fascia with animated ribbon LED displays to boost crowd engagement.

Sign Removal & Preparation

Before new installations began, Plumb Signs handled the safe removal and disposal of outdated stadium signage and electrical systems. This phase required heavy equipment coordination, traffic management near Highway 16, and on-site collaboration with the Rainiers’ facilities team.

Each removal site was inspected, resurfaced, and prepped for new structural supports, ensuring a clean and efficient build environment for the LED conversion.

Testimonial

Frequently Asked

About the Cheney Stadium Rebuild

What did the Cheney Stadium signage rebuild include?
The five-phase program covered a Highway 16 freestanding pylon with aluminum channel letters and a dynamic LED message center, a 35-foot by 66-foot HD LED main video board with four catwalks and TACOMA RAINIERS channel letters, a 16-foot by 70-foot auxiliary scoreboard with an illuminated Rainiers logo and synchronized visuals, and 130 feet of animated ribbon LED wrapped along the seating fascia.
How long did the project take?
Plumb Signs delivered the full stadium-wide rebuild in roughly 12 weeks, phased across five sequential installations between baseball seasons so Cheney Stadium stayed operational through the conversion.
Did Plumb Signs handle permitting for the stadium build?
Yes. Plumb Signs managed jurisdictional permitting alongside structural drawings, electrical routing, in-house UL-listed fabrication, and licensed installation across multiple elevations — a single-source program from design through final installation.
What kinds of LED systems were installed at Cheney Stadium?
Three integrated LED systems were installed: a 35 ft × 66 ft HD LED main video board with four catwalks, a 16 ft × 70 ft auxiliary scoreboard with synchronized visuals, and 130 ft of animated ribbon LED along the seating fascia. All illuminated assemblies are UL-listed.
Was Cheney Stadium closed during construction?
No. The program was phased as a between-seasons rolling install, with construction windows scheduled around Rainiers operations so the venue stayed open and operating through the entire signage rebuild.
Can Plumb Signs deliver projects of this scale outside Tacoma?
Yes. Plumb Signs designs, fabricates, and installs LED and architectural signage systems for sports venues, arenas, and corporate campuses across Washington State and the Pacific Northwest from its UL-listed Tacoma fabrication shop at 909 S 28th Street.
