Project Overview:
citizenM is a boutique hotel chain with over 30 hotels open in 11 different countries and an additional 15+ under development, including 2 in just Seattle. Targeting the global traveler, citizenM aims to provide an affordable luxury style hotel experience to their guests. Their brand identifies with the modern traveler by presenting itself in a fun way while pushing the boundaries of the traditional hotel experience.
Mortensen Construction is handling the unique development of the site due to citizenM's unconventional modular build package, which includes rooms being preassembled in Europe, shipped to Seattle, and stacked like building blocks on a concrete frame. Through an open bidding process, our team was awarded the opportunity to work on the sign portion of the project for their South Lake Union location on Westlake Ave N in Seattle.
Fabrication for the sign package started in November of 2019. Working to align with citizenM's build schedule, the goal was to get the primary signs completed and installed by February 13th, in time for their occupancy inspection. The bulk of the package was business as usual, but we knew the large scale art wrap was going to be a one of a kind experience that would likely require coordination with the other sub contractors on the job to make sure everything ran as smoothly as possible.
Considering this was the largest art wrap we have completed to date, we're pleased to say everything went according to plan. We attribute this success to the attention to detail at each phase of the install. The wrap was comprised of multiple 10 foot banner sections fused together to create a seamless look once installed. Given the size and material of the building's siding we needed to engineer attachments to anchor to the wall and attach to the frame of the wrap. After installing the building attachments we used a placeholder frame to line everything up and take back to the shop to create the layout for the final frame. Once the final frame was completed and attached to the building it was time to install the art wrap to the frame through the use of sign comp extrusions to keep the tension tight and everything locked in place. The result was a truly unique art wrap that's going to make citizenM stand out amongst all of the other hotels in the area.

Included in this sign package were evacuation maps on each floor, which required coordination with an outside specialty vendor to ensure everything is up to the compliance standards set by the building code inspectors and fire department.
